I spend hours and hours pacing back and forward, with Carly’s conversation on the phone still implanted into my mind.
‘Urgh…Cam what? What did you tell Evie?’ I thought pacing and continually looking at my watch
The question continued to bug me, I tried everything I could to distract my mind from the problem: looking on my tablet, eating, etc….but the more I tried the worst I could think of what Cam told Evie. I tried to ring Evie up, but she didn’t answer me….as I got to her voice mail box.
“Evie, its Zac….Carly told me that you ran out of the café with Cam, having a very pail face….look could you please call me back and tell me whats going on…thnxs, love you.”
I hung up and I rang Rita instantly.
“Hello?”
“Rita it’s me, Zac.”
“Zac? What’s wrong?”
“I think Cam said something to Evie about me…and Carly rang up to say that’s when they talked and then afterwards, she came out with her face pale as and running out of Ocean’s.” I explained
Rita was silent for a second.
“Would you have any idea of what Cam could have said to Evie?” Rita asked.
“No, not a clue…but I’m worried about her, I think Cam was trying to manipulate her into doing something, or that’s just a theory I have.”
“I see…I’ll keep an eye out for her….and Zac?”
“Yeah.”
“Just be careful, I don’t like what you told me, I sense another hand at this besides Cam’s.”
“You think the trident got to him as it did with me?”
“That could be the case…wait, you said the trident controlled you?”
“Yeah…it gave me up-starting nightmare’s and when I threaten to take over the Moon Pool, I think the trident had a hand in it…manipulating my thoughts and actions.” I explained.
“Sound dangerous…but just be very careful.”
Rita hung up on her end...this got me even more worried about tonight.

I then took one last look at my watch…. (After looking on my tablet to get the timetable of the full moon’s rising time for today) it was now time, I was about to head to the door spending my last time in my tail to get to Rita’s house and then to Mako. Just then the door opened and Evie stumbled her way through.
“Evie...what are you doing here?” I asked.
“Do I need a reason?”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“It’s just, I have to go it’s nearly time.” I stated.
“You can’t go out there.” Evie argued. “You’re walking into a trap, they’ve got you fooled.”
‘Who’s got who’s fooled?’ I thought.
I just smiled, the fact that tonight I’m finally going to get my normal life back…Evie must be worried about me.
“Look...i know you don’t like them, but there on my side.” I explained.
Evie was constantly shaking her head. We stood there; this conversation was going nowhere…
“I need to go.” I said making my way to the door, Evie blocked my path.
“No!” She exclaimed.
“Evie! Move!” I said politely.
“No!” She exclaimed she then turned, closed the door and locked it.
What the heck is she thinking? Does she want me to stay like this forever?’ I thought.
“I really have to go.” I said desperate.
Evie just stood and looked at me in the eye, not even moving an inch.
“If you go to Mako, then our deal is off.” Evie stated.
‘She-she wouldn’t…I thought she’d trusted me on this.’ I thought with a plea in my eye.
“I’ll tell everyone about them, and you.” Evie explained with a cold look in her eyes.
I scoffed…who would believe her if she told the whole town that me and the girls were merfolk (well with me being a half-breed) she’d have nothing to show but just words.
“You wouldn’t do that?” I dared her.
She shook her head.
“I’m sorry Zac…but I will.”
I rolled my head and eyes.
“If you somehow did…who will believe you? You’ll have no proof to back up your theory about us being merfolk.” I stated.
Evie licked her lips.
“I don’t care….I’ll make them believe me, and this is the only way to stop you…then-then I’ll take my chances.”
“yeah, right….listen what I said this morning I really meant it, I was trying to protect you from me, I didn’t want you tangled up in all of this, but now you’re the centre of attention…and I don’t wanna risk hurting you.” I exclaimed.
“Then try me…I can take anything you dish out.”
I was in silent…thinking of how Cam…Cam off all people could talk her into stopping me from changing my life back to the way it was, before the accident.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked her desperate. “I know those girls, I know I can trust them.”
“You’re wrong!” Evie exclaimed Zac…Cam said that-“
“Cam? What’s came got to do with this?” I asked with a screwed up face.
“This didn’t make any sense? Why would Cam want to stop me?’ I thought
“He said, they want to make you like this forever.” Evie explained in a soft voice.
I screwed up my face more…urgh i knew I was stupid to trust him, he manipulated my story of me, trying to change my life back to normal.
“Cam said that?” I asked.
Evie didn’t answer me as she just nodded. I licked my lips, so why? Why would turn Evie against me?
“Whose idea was it too got to Mako in the first Place, to get the trident from me?” I asked.
“Cam’s.”
“Right, and who has the trident, now?”
“Cam.”
“Who planted the seed of information into your head earlier today? To try and get you to stop me from going to Mako tonight?”
“…Cam.”
I could see that the information was starting to sink into Evie…Cam had been manipulating her. But it still didn’t answer my question why would Cam go into all of this trouble? What hidden agenda could he have-….No!
“I have to go.” I pushed past Evie (this time she let me pass), through the door and jumped right into the canal at a sprinting pace. (Evie was right behind me the whole time…except form diving into the canal)

After I’d transformed I surfaced.
“Can you man the fort?” I asked Evie.
She nodded.
“If my parents ask, just leave a note on my door…and head home. Don’t speak to anyone just head home” I ordered.
She nodded again, I could see she was about to burst into tears. I swam up closer to her.
“I’m sorry to do this to you…but Cam is about to do something really stupid, and I need to stop him.” I said with confidence.
Evie knelt down on the pier…. She leaned across and kissed me on the lips.
“Good luck fish boy.” She said with a smile as he parted from my lips.
I smiled and took off under the water at mind bending speeds, heading straight towards Mako.

I didn’t slow down for anything, I used my powers to move stuff out of the way, and including fishing boats and swimmers as I sped past them...and only what they could see was a tail of a fish.
When I got to Mako, I quickly dried off and headed straight towards the cave entrance, running at the fastest speed my human legs could carry me.

I spotted Cam up ahead of me, waiting by the cave’s entrance to open up on the full moon.
“Don’t do this.” I pleaded with him.
Cam turned to face me.
“You too late.” Cam said with a wicked smile. “I’m gonna do, what you couldn’t.”
I was still panting, but I could still keep my voice even.
“You’re making a mistake.” I rebuffed walking more closely to him.
“You’re wasting your breath.”
I was thinking of trying to take this slowly.
“Come on, Cam…put it down.” I instructed him.
Cam just looked at me; he’d not moved an inch… and with the trident in hand he was ready for merman-vs-human face off.
I looked up in the sky, the Full Moon was not in position yet, so there was still time to reason with him.
“We don’t belong here.” I stated.
Cam just smiled at me.
“Speak for yourself.”
“You could get hurt...Seriously hurt.”
‘I know what it did to me and I don’t want the samething happening to him as well….having the trident controlling his actions and thoughts. I didn’t want to believe myself that the trident already had him firmly in its grip.’ I thought in panic.
“You take that ‘thing’ in there…it will destroy everything.” I explained, trying to get it through his thick skull.
But Cam didn’t react to my explanation about the dream I had about the trident in the Moon pool

“Do you remember that night we camped here?” Cam asked me.
‘I do remember, it was night that started all of this…this mini war merman and mermaids, the almost break up of me and Evie and now the destroyed friendship of Cam and me.’ I thought without making any fuss about it.
“It should have been me…not you.” Cam then turned sideways to me.
I took a step forward.
“I won’t let you do this.” I stated ready for battle.
“…I’m not asking your permission. You had your chance and you gave it up…. (Cam looked up to the moon) But I’m not going to.”
I looked up to the sky…it was only seconds left until the moon was in position.
“You can walk away from this…the trident is controlling you, don’t let it.” I pleaded.
“Too late for that!” Cam gleamed. “If it’ll give me the chance to get what I deserve….then so be it.”
I wanted to lunge for the trident, but knowing that I showed him how to use it…I was completely helpless, not even my powers could do it for me.
We both stare into the sky as the moon positioned itself about the volcano and the Moon Pool itself….i briefly looked at the trident, the opal was glowing and then I could hear the entrance opening. Cam looked at the entrance that had opened up, noticed me looking at the trident…he just grinned at me.

“This was meant to happen, Zac.” Cam announced. “You can’t stop it.” Cam then turned to walk into the cave.
I then raced to the trident.
“Give it to me!” I shouted as we wrestled for it.
We pulled back and forth between each other…me trying to save him and Cam trying to control him. Cam was grunting as we, un-noticing the build-up of power an then too late as it busted out of the trident.
Sent me flying backwards, up high and into the cliff face, where I bumped the back of my head…and dumped my body onto the ground below, like a sack of potatoes.
